We were recently proud to support Bungalook Creek Wildlife Shelter, helping a little flying fox named Simon get his second chance at life.
Recently, we were proud to help fund a specialised humidicrib for Bungalook Creek Wildlife Shelter, dedicated to helping adult grey-headed flying foxes — a species currently on the nationally threatened list. Our contribution supported the dedicated carers who work tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate and release these amazing animals.
One of those carers is Emma, who shared the story of Simon, an 11-week-old pup who was rescued near Lilydale Lake. After one of his early flights ended in a mishap, Simon was found with abrasions and swelling on his wing. With expert care, Simon was nursed back to health and last week, he joined a group of 30 flying foxes released back into the wild. His story is one of many that show the real impact of community support.
The Lilydale Lake colony where Simon was found is a relatively new satellite colony, established in early 2024 during a food shortage event. Flying foxes are nomadic by nature, often travelling up to 50 km a night in search of food and reaching speeds of 35 km/h when the winds are right. More than just impressive flyers, flying foxes are Australia’s only nocturnal seed dispersers and some of the most efficient tree pollinators — vital for maintaining biodiversity in our forests.
Fun fact? The ancestors of today’s flying foxes may have evolved from primates. That means they could share a common ancestor with humans!
